Hiking Hadrian's Wall and Beyond...

11/7/2013

Garrett and I took, what I will consider a life-changing trip, to Scotland to hike Hadrian's wall, and to explore just a bit of the Scottish Highlands (a place that we certainly plan to head back to in order to do some climbing).

Canyoneering in Zion - A Photo Essay

WOW - I know it has been a long time, and I know most of you have been waiting for a new post about as patiently as someone I know waits for ice cream to finish!
Picture
But wait no longer - there's exciting photos to check out in this canyoneering post!
Picture
Well, I took the last two weeks off from writing and from the internet all together in order to explore a new place... my new favorite happy place. Zion Canyon.
Zion National Park Sunset
I got out there with some of my good friends from college to do a bit of canyoneering, but the first couple of days poured rain in an unprecedented long fall storm, so we ended up doing a lot of hiking for the first couple of days. There were beautiful views nonetheless.
Picture
Finally, we got to drop into a couple canyons... we did Keyhole, Birch Hollow, Pine Creek, Echo, Spry, Behunin, and Mystery in Zion before Craig and I headed out to Arizona to drop Water Holes Canyon... a story that deserves a whole post to itself. For now, let's just say it took 33 hours. Hehe.

The Resignation Letter

6/30/2013

In my post on Why I Just Quit My Good Job, I mentioned my resignation letter. This elicited a few  questions from readers, so I thought it would be informative as to my reasons for leaving if I posted the actual resignation letter. Authenticity and full transparency is the best policy for me, so hopefully this answers more questions! The school name has been replaced with Esteemed School - you guys understand :)
Dear Esteemed School,

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the wonderfully curious community of learners that is Esteemed School. It has been a pleasure for me to see this community of students grow as people, and in helping the community to learn I have grown tremendously myself. When teachers can learn as much from students as students from teachers, a school is certainly doing something right. I am excited to see how the students of our school will change the world.
However, due to the fact that I firmly believe in the principles of full engagement, it is time for me to move on to new pursuits. Energy and interest are cyclical, and intermittent disengagement as well as a meandering course are necessary means by which I will ultimately find my life’s pursuit (doing that which excites me) and achieve my goals (making as much of a positive impact on environmental issues as possible). Thus, I will not be returning to Esteemed School next year. I regret leaving such an excellent school that has done so much for me, but these beliefs and passions are pushing me out into the world, and I am taking the leap.
I wish the best to the school and will be following its extraordinary progress!
Be well and have happy journeys,

This post is a memoir of my reflections from graduation. Do you keep a journal? I find it amazingly enlightening to keep one, and to occasionally reflect on it. That's what I did today. Congratulations Class of 2013!

How I Grow (By Scaring the Crap Out of Myself)

5/13/2013

As you can imagine, leading trad scares the crap out of me. But as I always discuss, we experience the most growth in life from doing the stuff that really scares us. If you can overcome your fear of heights and climb a big wall, you can overcome your fear of taking a leap of faith and starting your own business, asking for a raise, or saying you're sorry.
Luckily for me, I have Joaquin Fox to keep pushing me out of the comfort zone. We climbed a spire in Sedona the day after I got back from the river trip. Awesome.

Loon Bay Stars - Guest Photo

After two days of paddling along the Maine-Canada border, encountering class 3 rapids, driving rains and mild hypothermia, we slid silently into Loon Bay, backlit by a breathtaking sunset.  This tree was asking to be climbed.  Photo was taken at the moment the stars overtook the sun as the brightest lights in the sky.
