Today, we built with the Habitat for Humanity in Andover. We worked on an old building that is being restored in order to make affordable apartments for around 10 families. The low of the day was walking in and being handed a pipe that was very heavy. Suspiciously heavy. Lead. At least they doyn't make them like that anymore. However, as the day went on we had a great time and got a lot of work done - I worked in the afternoon with Zach to take out an old floor using a jackhammer. Aaron came in and wanted a shot with the jackhammer also, so we had him go at the floor with it. Aaron is not the biggest guy in the world. In fact he is quite small. He is also an aspiring actor/comedian. Anyway, watching his facial expressions as he tried to lift the jackhammer that probably approached his own weight was quite amusing, and he began to exclaim that the three of us were an exclusive club, known as "The Burly Men". The requirements to be in the club are that "you must have a ripped upper body; or want one. You also must be above 6 feet tall... or have an ego that large..." and the list continues from there in a similar manner. We also had a great shovel guitar performance of "Glory Days".
The day was concluded with a fantastic dinner at the Webber's, parents of Chris Webber. Chris was an incredibly passionate and personable early director of Bike and Build, and many of the connections and the generosity that I am benefiting from now are a result of his efforts. He was killed in a hit and run in New York City in 2007, but his passion seems to be somehow felt by all those connected to B&B, even those who never met him, so may it continue to inspire us and ride with us.
