Amarillo by morning, west from Wheeler town. It's a good day for building, and puttin my blue jeans on
But when the sun will rise in that Texas sky, I'll be pedaling Friona way
Crossing over the state line, with Portales on my mind

Portales, New Mexico
Crossing into New Mexico, there was no state line, which was a big disappointment for me. The even bigger disappointment, though, was that Springs was kidnapped in Friona. I had received what I suspected to be ransom notes - they were pictures of Springs holding up signs with words on them like "you", "will", "to", "go", and "Sadie Hawkins" on them. I just couldn't figure out the puzzle.
The ride, though, turned out to be just amazing. Mike, Mak, and I stopped at a Lowe's where we were generously given a shade tent - perfect for lunch stops in the New Mexico desert. Later on, we visited a museum devoted to the Blackwater Draw paleontological site where remains of both megafauna (the great extinct animals from the not-so-distant past like mammoths, mastodons, long-horned buffalo, American lions, horses, saber-tooth cats, and the American cheetah) and people were found. More appropriately, remains of people killing and eating megafauna were found.
The folks in Portales were amazing! We were greeted with an amazing dinner and later the mayor of the city stood up and delivered a short address ending with the words “By the power vested in me by the town of Portales, I hereby proclaim August 3rd as Bike and Build Day in the Town of Portales!” We then launched into traditional songs re-spun by the local funny-man, Chris Harrell. It was an all-around great time, and after dinner I solved the puzzle of Springs absence. I received a picture of Chrissy with Springs in her arms - Springs was just helping her ask me to Sadie Hawkins! The dance is going to be in Arizona with a Western theme, so Springs and I better get ready for that. In the morning, we were escorted out of the city by a police escort - we felt like celebrities!
We rode through the barren desert for 95 miles into Roswell, NM. Springs of course had to wear a tin foil hat to protect him from aliens, and we visited the UFO museum there before heading on Westward in the morning.
