Writing and Photography
"Writing and reading decrease our sense of isolation. They deepen and widen and expand our sense of life: they feed the soul."-Anne Lamont, Bird by Bird
In need of a writer or photographer? Want something scientific, yet funny and readable for any audience? Do you want to work with someone who isn't blinded by their ego or personality? Do you want someone who is able to see what others don't (the science side) in topics, and explain them in a way that resonates with general readers? Do you want someone who can BOTH write and photograph? I am your Brave Monkey.
I do indeed contract out for specific projects! Contact me directly with inquiries.
Here's a little more on my background:
Writing was one of my first loves.
Even before I began adventuring, the back left pocket of all of my pants had the grey, molded outline of a small moleskine notebook in them. I filled those notebooks at the rate of about 2 a year.
Not all of that writing was intended to entertain audiences; instead, most of it simply helped me live life more vividly. I would write to resolve ideas, remember appointments or quotations I had heard during a talk, and to solidify stories or concepts in my mind. No other pursuit has allowed me to learn so much about myself.
The need for good, entertaining writing in today's world was never more evident for me than after getting my Bachelor's of Science in Biogeochemistry and conducting primary research at several of the Nation's top biological institutes. That seems a bit ironic, right?
Well, it turns out that - believe it or not - many scientists aren't very good at communicating their ideas to broad audiences (this statement is actually a bit misleading as scientists are often encouraged by the nature of the job to not communicate results to broader audiences, for it would call into question their scientific credibility. E.g. Did they alter data to make it seem more believable?). Whatever the reason for this, I began to realize that scientific issues are very poorly understood by politicians and the public alike, meaning that in turn, important environmental issues are often times not discussed with the background that is needed to make correct policy decisions. By 'correct' policy decisions, I mean those that will benefit the most people for the greatest amount of time (including those yet to be born...).
One of my great passions is to be a link between the scientific world and the general public. Within the pages of this section, you will find writings that reflect that passion, and hopefully you will learn a thing or two.
Photography developed as a passion more recently. While I have always enjoyed taking photos, it wasn't until late in 2012 that I bought an old, cheap DSLR off of Craigslist, and I was hooked. Since then, my equipment has been greatly upgraded, but the passion is the same.
As my art is still fairly young, I tend to use photographs to help me tell stories through my writing. However, I have been hired for a number of occasions - weddings, company photography, and adventure photography. Obviously, I specialize in the latter. If you need someone to capture something epic, especially beyond the comfort zones of most photographers, I am your man.
