Kayaking

"There is no rushing a river. When you go there, you go at the pace of the water and that pace ties you into a flow that is older than life on this planet. Acceptance of that pace, even for a day, changes us, reminds us of other rhythms beyond the sound of our own heartbeats." Jeff Rennike, River Days

When I was 16 years old, I - like most youth of that age - received one of those all-important rights of passage... I got my driver's license. Again like many youth, I had been saving up money for quite some time in anticipation for this day. This, in itself, is not particularly interesting. But what I find amusing about my own tendencies is that nearly the first thing I did after getting a driver's license was not to buy a cheap old car, but instead to buy a kayak.
Some of my family made fun of me for the purchase - I had only been aboard a kayak once in my life before. But, despite the fact that it was admittedly a bit of an impulse purchase, I knew it would become one of the great loves of my life. And so it did.

Being in a kayak on the smooth waters of the Potomac River above Great Falls is to be floating amongst the clouds of Heaven. In some ways, I mean this literally - slack water can reflect the images of clouds circumnavigating the stern of your kayak so clearly that you can imagine yourself on top of them, rather than on top of water.

Within the pages of this section, you will find reflections similar to those of the clouds around my kayak, except perhaps a bit more wordy and worldy than the reflections of which I speak. Nonetheless, read, enjoy, comment, and explore for yourself.
